The Queen, A Victorian Bed and Breakfast

From Caterpillar to Monarch: The Golden Secret

Collage of monarch caterpillars and chrysalis

This little guy wasted no time! Watching the amazing transformation from a caterpillar to a monarch butterfly is a truly magical experience. As a Monarch Waystation, we are so happy to be part of this process.

Ever wondered why a monarch chrysalis has a gold band? ✨ It’s not just for looks! The shiny dots are thought to be a warning sign for predators or a form of camouflage. The metallic appearance is created by the presence of a structural cell layer combined with yellow carotenoid pigments, which the caterpillar gets from its diet of milkweed.

Isn’t nature amazing?
