Our Commitment to a Greener Future: Sustainability Policies & Practices
We are delighted you’ve chosen to stay with us and hope you’ll share in our green philosophy. Our goal is not only to provide a comfortable and memorable stay but also to inspire a deeper appreciation for sustainable living, hoping you’ll go home a little richer for the experience.
Leading by Example: Awards and Partnerships
Our dedication to environmentally sound practices has been recognized:
CCRA Emerald Award (2024): The Queen proudly received the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority (CCRA)’s annual Emerald Award. This honors our dedication to environmentally sound practices and commitment to a greener future, celebrating our active participation in waste reduction, recycling, and composting initiatives as part of the CCRA’s Green Community Partnership Program for local sustainability leaders.
Centre County Green Business Partner: We were added to the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority’s list of 2022 Centre County Green Business Partners for our efforts in both recycling and sustainability.
We are also proud to partner with several organizations that share our environmental values:
We believe every individual action contributes to a larger impact, especially in reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Recycling: Recycling baskets are conveniently located in the halls for glass, cans, plastic, magazines, and newspapers.
Minimizing Single-Use Plastics: We encourage guests to enjoy our fresh local spring water in reusable water bottles. We use full-size refillable amenities to reduce plastic waste and are currently converting to compostable K-cups in our rooms.
Conscious Consumption: We do NOT use paper plates, paper cups (except for “to go” coffee), or paper towels.
Composting: All kitchen waste and coffee grounds are composted.
Nurturing Nature: Gardens, Local Sourcing & Wildlife Support
Our grounds are a testament to our belief in working with nature.
Pollinator Paradise: We have eliminated much of the lawn on our property in favor of insect and pollinator-friendly plants. Guests can appreciate the importance and beauty of an “unkempt” garden, which harbors next spring’s pollinators, shelters wildlife through cold winter months, and provides nutritious food for birds. Our beautiful pollinator gardens with minimal lawn space are a certified backyard wildlife habitat, highlighting the importance of local pollinator species.
Homegrown & Local: We grow our own pesticide-free tomatoes, herbs, and berries and prioritize buying locally grown produce whenever possible.
Year-Round Freshness: Our hydroponic garden tower allows us to offer fresh, pesticide-free herbs, tomatoes, and strawberries throughout the winter, providing an opportunity to share our knowledge of hydroponic gardening.
Sweet Rewards: Guests can enjoy delicious honey collected from our own hives, offering a chance to learn about the importance of bees and pollinators.
Water Conservation in the Garden: Rain barrels are used to collect water for watering our gardens.
Eco-Friendly Products & Practices
Our commitment to sustainability extends to the products we use daily.
Gentle on You & the Planet: Products like our toilet paper, cleaning products, and laundry detergent are chosen because they do not have any harsh chemicals or perfumes added. We use natural cleaning products such as vinegar whenever possible and a steam mop instead of chemical products for cleaning floors.
Sustainable Sips: We use only fair-trade coffee.
Recycled Resources: We use recycled copy paper.
Conserving Energy & Water
We are mindful of our energy and water consumption.
Linen Services: Sheets are changed every third or fourth day, though daily changes are available upon request. Towels are changed every other day; for more frequent changes, please leave them on the floor or in the shower.
Water Heating: We use on-demand hot water heaters to avoid storing unneeded hot water, ensuring guests will not run out.
Smart Temperature Control: Winter room temperatures are maintained at 60 degrees, allowing guests to adjust their room’s heat to their comfort level using their fireplace. The first floor features a radiant floor heating system, keeping feet toasty even at lower ambient temperatures.
Cooling Naturally & Efficiently: Guest rooms have ceiling fans, and windows may be opened in the summer. If humidity is high, we may request windows be kept closed to utilize the central air system efficiently.
Efficient Lighting: We use compact fluorescent or LED bulbs where feasible. Where incandescent bulbs are necessary, dimmer switches are installed to save energy. Motion sensors control some lights, adding convenience and saving energy. Some outdoor lighting has been converted to solar power.
A Recycled Queen: Sustainable Furnishings & Heritage
Our commitment to reuse extends to the very fabric of The Queen.
Cherished Furnishings: Most items and furnishings within The Queen have a history – they are antiques, yard sale finds, or cherished family heirlooms.
A Grand Revival: The Queen herself has been thoughtfully recycled from an abandoned shell to her former beauty.
Spreading Awareness
We hope that by experiencing our sustainable practices, guests will be inspired to adopt their own eco-friendly habits in their daily lives. Your stay supports a business dedicated to making a positive environmental impact.
Our Commitment to Reducing Food Waste
At The Queen, we believe that exceptional hospitality and a deep respect for our environment go hand-in-hand. Our commitment to sustainability is woven into the fabric of your stay, and a key part of this is our mindful approach to food. We strive to minimize food waste at every step, ensuring that the delicious, fresh breakfast you enjoy is also a responsible one.
Here’s how we champion sustainability from our kitchen to your plate:
Fresh, Thoughtful Preparation: We cook your breakfast fresh each morning. To ensure quality and significantly reduce potential waste, we prepare portions based on the number of guests we know will be joining us.
Planning with Purpose: To help us prepare the right amount of food, we kindly confirm with our guests the day before if they plan to have breakfast. This simple step is crucial in our efforts to minimize leftovers and reduce waste.
Hyperlocal Sourcing – From Our Gardens to Your Table:
Our Outdoor Harvest: We delight in using ingredients grown right here on our property. Throughout the seasons, this includes fresh berries, aromatic herbs, and beautiful edible flowers that garnish your plates, all hand-picked from our gardens. This not only provides the freshest flavors but also reduces food miles and packaging.
Year-Round Indoor Aeroponic Garden: We’ve embraced innovative aeroponic gardening indoors! This allows us to grow a variety of salad greens, juicy tomatoes, delicate garnish flowers, and herbs for your breakfast year-round, further lessening our reliance on external food sources and their associated environmental impact.
Closing the Loop Through Composting: Any unavoidable kitchen scraps, such as fruit and vegetable trimmings from breakfast preparation, are diligently composted. This natural process enriches our garden soil, diverts waste from landfills, and allows us to give back to the earth.
Our food waste reduction strategies are part of our broader dedication to eco-conscious practices at The Queen. We are passionate about providing a memorable and responsible stay, and we appreciate you joining us in these efforts to cherish our resources. Enjoy your breakfast knowing it’s prepared with care for both you and our planet!
Lithium-based Battery Safety
Our commitment to safety extends to the use and handling of lithium-based batteries. These batteries power many of our everyday devices, from phones to e-bikes. However, they can pose fire risks if not handled correctly.
Key Safety Practices:
Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for using, charging, storing, and disposing of lithium-based batteries.
Proper Charging: Use only the charger intended for your device. Avoid overcharging and charge in an open, well-ventilated area.
Avoid Damage: Protect batteries from physical damage such as drops, bumps, or punctures. Exposure to water or extreme temperatures can also increase risk.
Inspect Regularly: Check batteries for signs of damage, such as swelling, leaking, or overheating. If you notice any issues, discontinue use immediately and dispose of the battery safely according to local regulations.
Safe Storage: Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials.
Disposal: Dispose of lithium-based batteries in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulations. Do not dispose of them in regular trash.
By following these best practices, we can all contribute to a safer environment and reduce the risks associated with lithium-based batteries.
