An integral part of Bellefonte’s rich history is its ties to The Underground Railroad, with six stops running through our town. Bellefonte Art Museum’s Underground Railroad installation, “A Journey to Freedom,” commemorates the roles of our region in the workings of The Underground Railroad. It gives evidence of African American capabilities and achievements as well as celebrates their central role in U.S. history. The museum is open to the public for FREE tours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, or by appointment. To schedule a tour, e-mail bellefontemuseum@gmail.com.

The Pennsylvania Match Company was founded in Bellefonte in 1899, and quickly became one of the largest match producers in the U.S. The Match Factory was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Today, it provides a unique location for history buffs, housing an American Philatelic Society and its extensive Research Library. The Match Factory also hosts a variety of rotating historic exhibits sure to fascinate and enlighten visitors. A recently installed permanent exhibit commemorates The Holocaust using stamps to tell the story. Tours are available for FREE Monday through Friday from 9am – 4pm.

Bellefonte is also proud to be an integral part of Penn State history. When John Dunlop arrived in the Bellefonte area in 1794, in conjunction with his iron works, he brought with him many prominent attorneys — future judges and governors of Pennsylvania. These men and their successors were paramount to the founding of the Farmers High School, which later became Penn State University.

The Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County celebrates the human spirit through the arts and recognizes the importance of art in our lives by exhibiting and selling art by local artists, providing creative enrichment for visitors of all ages, and exhibiting artistic and cultural shows from outside the area.

The museum is FREE and open to the public Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm or by appointment. Visit their website for a full exhibition schedule and a list of upcoming events.

The Big Spring Festival is held in Talleyrand Park in May. This event celebrates our bountiful supply of water with entertainment, crafts, fish stocking, and more.

The Outdoor Adventure Expo promotes nature-based tourism and highlights Bellefonte’s beautiful and easily accessible natural assets. Several regional vendors, non-profits, and businesses that specialize in outdoor and recreation-related products showcase workshops that help you level up your outdoor skills.

The Bellefonte Children’s Fair held on a Saturday in early June, features five fun-filled hours of activities, games, entertainment, raffles and displays. Proceeds to this event benefit the Bellefonte Borough playgrounds.

The Bellefonte Cruise is held each Father’s Day weekend in June, and includes a sock hop on Friday, followed by an open cruise, all-vehicle show, a parade of show vehicles, motorcycle poker run, and more on Saturday.

The Craft Beverage Expo held at Talleyrand Park on Father’s Day features Centre County wineries, distilleries, cideries, and breweries along with live music.

Summer Sounds from the Gazebo runs every Sunday between June and August and brings folk, pop, rock, and jazz to Talleyrand Park. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the live music from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm. (New talent is always welcome!)

The Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair Over 100 local and national artists and crafters come to town in early August for The Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair. This event provides family entertainment, tasty food, and children’s activities.

The Fall Festival is held on a weekend afternoon in Talleyrand Park. Create a scarecrow, carve a pumpkin, enjoy ghost stories, music, food and more.

The Centre County Grange Fair With a 150-year history, this fair is the only remaining tent fair in the nation. With everything from food, live concerts, motorsports events, and equine exhibitions, this fair is a local favorite and home-away from home for many families who visit every year in August.
